Netanyahu Sets Conditions for a Peace Agreement with Syria

Tel Aviv – September 2025 – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has outlined key conditions for any potential peace agreement between Israel and Syria, stressing that the talks remain ongoing but far from reaching a final deal.

Israel’s Demands in the Negotiations

According to a statement released by Netanyahu’s office on Wednesday, the progress of the negotiations depends on protecting Israel’s strategic interests. These include the disarmament of southwestern Syria and ensuring the safety and security of the Druze community inside Syria, as reported by Yedioth Ahronoth.

Netanyahu had earlier noted on Sunday that while some progress has been achieved toward a security arrangement, the signing of a formal peace agreement is “not imminent.”

Syria’s Position at the United Nations

Speaking before the U.N. General Assembly, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa declared that “Syria is reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world.”

In his speech, Al-Sharaa criticized Israel, accusing it of continuous threats since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December. He argued that Israel’s policies “contradict the international community’s support for Syria and its people,” warning that such actions risk dragging the region into uncontrollable conflicts.

Commitment to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement

Al-Sharaa reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to the 1974 disengagement agreement with Israel, urging the international community to support Damascus in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also emphasized the need for global solidarity in the face of rising regional threats.
