Netanyahu Races to Dismiss Shin Bet Chief Before Testimony to Supreme Court
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly rushing to dismiss Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar before Bar delivers a potentially revealing testimony to the Supreme Court, according to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.
Bar’s anticipated statement is expected to expose political and personal pressure allegedly exerted by Netanyahu. Reports suggest that Netanyahu attempted to influence Bar to provide a security assessment that could justify postponing his own trial. Bar is also said to have refused Netanyahu’s requests to curb protests against the controversial judicial overhaul and played a role in investigations involving Netanyahu’s close associates.
This move unfolds amid an escalating legal dispute between the Israeli government and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara over the legality of Bar’s dismissal. Despite recommendations by Supreme Court justices during a lengthy hearing last week, no compromise has been reached.
The court has issued an interim order preventing Bar’s dismissal or the appointment of a replacement until April 24, pending a final decision.
In a significant development, the Israeli government has requested the Supreme Court to expedite its ruling. The request was tied to the recent arrest of a Shin Bet reservist suspected of leaking classified information. In its submission, the government claimed that “the continued leadership of a failed security chief, in whom the government has unanimously lost confidence, poses a threat to national security, international reputation, and intelligence cooperation.”
Legal experts believe Netanyahu fears Bar’s testimony, which could compel him to submit a detailed explanation to the court regarding the motives behind the dismissal—going beyond his repeated public claims of “loss of trust.”
