New System Brings Major Transformation to Istanbul International Airport
Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced that Istanbul Airport will begin operating with the “Triple Independent Parallel Runway Operations” system starting Thursday, April 17. He stated that this step aims to enhance the efficiency of air operations and accelerate aircraft traffic flow.
Uraloğlu explained that thanks to this revolutionary system, three aircraft will be able to land or take off simultaneously, making Turkey the first European country to adopt this advanced technology, which is currently used in the United States.
He emphasized that the implementation of the independent triple runway will speed up air traffic flow at Istanbul Airport and increase its dynamic capacity. He noted that the project began in the last quarter of 2022, with risk assessments, safety studies, and simulations conducted in 2023 and 2024. This was done in collaboration with the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol), the State Airports Authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and Turkish Airlines.
Furthermore, Uraloğlu confirmed that a new airspace design was created and air traffic controllers were trained using advanced systems to ensure operational readiness.
He added that Istanbul Airport has been the busiest airport in Europe for years, and with the launch of this new system, its position in Europe will be further strengthened.
