Oceans Creeping Towards Land: NASA Sounds the Alarm

The U.S. space agency NASA has released alarming findings regarding its analysis of global sea levels, which saw an “unexpected” rise last year.

According to NASA’s recorded data, sea levels in 2024 rose by 0.59 centimeters (0.23 inches), compared to the expected rate of 0.43 centimeters (0.17 inches). This reveals an unforeseen increase in ocean warming and the melting of glaciers, ice sheets, and polar ice caps.

The danger posed by these figures lies in their potential to trigger devastating storms and floods on land, threaten many coastal cities in the future, accelerate shoreline erosion, and disrupt ecosystems.

Greenhouse gas emissions from land contribute to ocean warming, as oceans absorb 90% of the planet’s emissions. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory sea level researcher Josh Willis stated that the rate of sea level rise is accelerating and will continue to do so.
