Out of Control: Robot Attacks Audience in China

The Economic Times published a video circulating on Chinese social media showing a robot performing movements for an audience at a local festival in Tianjin last February. Suddenly, the robot jumped off the stage and attempted to attack one of the attendees, as seen in the footage, leaving the audience in shock. Security personnel quickly intervened to stop the robot, which appeared to be acting uncontrollably.

Although the event organizers downplayed the incident, calling it a “minor robotic failure,” it raised serious concerns about future AI-driven technology and the potential risks if such systems, for any reason, decided to attack or even eliminate humans as their capabilities advance.

Regarding the incident, Metro UK reported that the robot was developed by the Chinese company Unitree Robotics and had passed all safety tests. The company stated that additional measures have been implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. However, other reports suggest that the robot’s sudden lunge toward the audience was caused by a software glitch, leading to unpredictable behavior.
