Political Disputes Escalate in Turkey, German Foreign Ministry Calls for Fair Trial for Imamoglu

Turkey’s Ministry of Interior announced on Sunday the suspension of Istanbul’s mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu after a court sentenced him to prison in a corruption case. The mayors of the Beylikdüzü and Şişli municipalities, Muhammed Murat Çalık and Rasul Emrah Şahan, were also suspended. Additionally, the ministry decided to impose “legal guardianship” on the Şişli municipality and appointed a government official to serve as the “legal guardian” of the municipality.

İmamoğlu, along with several local officials, was arrested after being accused of “assisting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party” (PKK), which İmamoğlu strongly denied, describing the accusations as “baseless.”

Opposition to İmamoğlu: “He Knows Who Orchestrated the Plot”

The leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Özgür Özel, described İmamoğlu’s arrest as a “conspiracy” against the man who won three consecutive elections in Istanbul, attributing the arrest to İmamoğlu’s victory over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the previous election, stating that this decision is part of a “political plot.” Özel emphasized that legal and social objections will be filed for İmamoğlu’s release, asserting that “the people will not abandon the ballot boxes,” and pointed out that İmamoğlu knows who is behind the conspiracy.

German Foreign Ministry Calls for Fair Trial

In related news, Germany’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for a fair trial for Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu following his provisional detention in connection with corruption charges. The ministry considered the move a “serious setback” for democracy in Turkey. A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry stated that political competition should not be managed through courts and prisons, calling for transparent clarification of the accusations and an investigation in line with the principles of the rule of law. The ministry also demanded the same treatment for those arrested in protests.
