Privacy and Personal Data at Risk: Syrian Ministry of Communications Warns of WhatsApp Breaches
The National Authority for Information Technology, affiliated with the Ministry of Communications and Technology in Syria, has issued an official warning regarding the increasing number of cybersecurity breaches.
The authority stated that these breaches target users of modified and unofficial versions of the WhatsApp application, in addition to the discovery of a serious security vulnerability in the Windows operating system. It explained that it had received numerous complaints from users within Syria reporting account breaches and the theft of personal data.
Security Vulnerability in Windows
Microsoft revealed a new security vulnerability labeled (CVE-2025-29809), which affects Serverg systems, Windows 10, and Windows 11.
This vulnerability is linked to the Credential Guard feature and, if exploited, allows attackers to steal user information such as usernames and passwords, potentially enabling them to access other systems within the same network.
Risks of Modified WhatsApp Applications
Jihad Alala, Director of the Information Security Center at the authority, warned about the risks of using modified and unofficial versions of WhatsApp, such as GB WhatsApp and KB WhatsApp Plus.
He pointed out that these applications are subject to activity monitoring by attackers, which threatens users’ privacy.
He added: “These apps contain security vulnerabilities that allow access to private conversations, including sensitive data, with the potential presence of embedded malware.”
Recommendations for Safe WhatsApp Use
Alala urged users to rely on official versions of WhatsApp and to download them only from trusted stores such as Google Play and the App Store to ensure security updates.
He also recommended enabling two-step verification, regularly reviewing app permissions, not sharing the verification code (OTP) with anyone, and refraining from entering personal information on suspicious links.
Additional Internet Safety Tips
Alala stressed the importance of avoiding unknown links to prevent spyware and phishing pages, and avoiding the use of public Wi-Fi networks when accessing sensitive apps.
He highlighted the danger of opening suspicious files that could be used to breach user data and access network systems.
He also advised promptly updating operating systems and contacting technical support or cybersecurity teams if any unusual activity is observed.
