Ramadan Iftar Campaign Posters Spark Outrage in Syria… Authorities Arrest Those Responsible
As Syria continues to grapple with the aftermath of tensions in the coastal region and concerns over their impact on civil peace, a local volunteer group in rural Aleppo has ignited controversy on social media following its campaign to provide free Iftar meals to residents.
The group, known as “Abq Volunteer Team,” posted a promotional video on its social media accounts showcasing its Iftar campaign. However, one of the clips featured a poster with sectarian slogans and incitement to hatred, placed on the packaged meals that were being distributed.
The video triggered widespread condemnation, prompting the campaign organizers to delete it quickly. However, dozens of social media users had already documented and reposted it. Shortly afterward, a lawyer announced that he had filed an official complaint with the General Security Agency, which led to the arrest of the team’s leader.
The incident sparked intense debate over whether individuals like those involved should be allowed to form and manage civil society organizations. Many called for suspending the group’s activities until investigations are completed and accountability is determined.
Meanwhile, the team released a statement on its Facebook page, apologizing to the Syrian people and the affected community. They asserted that their intention was not to incite sectarian strife or hatred and took full responsibility for the incident.
