Rising Divisions Among Israeli Leadership: Halevi Criticizes Mossad, Tensions Surface Between Katz and Zamir
Former Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has issued sharp criticism of Mossad Director David Barnea, accusing him of mismanaging the Iranian file and engaging in media activity that allegedly undermines national security interests.
According to Israel’s Channel 13, Halevi made these remarks during closed-door meetings with unidentified individuals. His criticism focused on what he described as Barnea’s poor decision-making in addressing Iran’s nuclear threat. Halevi reportedly expressed concern over the public disclosure of covert operations inside Iran, arguing that such revelations have compromised the effectiveness of intelligence efforts.
Halevi also claimed that Barnea had overstepped his authority by making recommendations beyond his remit and participating in sensitive decisions without assuming accountability. He cited the release of video footage from Mossad operations and alleged that Barnea sought to amplify Mossad’s role by attributing military achievements to the intelligence agency—something Halevi viewed as a sign of weakened institutional cooperation.

Military-Intelligence Coordination in Iran Operations
In June, Israel reportedly carried out a military operation targeting individuals and sites in Iran linked to nuclear and missile development programs. The mission was jointly executed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Mossad, with ground forces leading the strikes and Mossad subsequently releasing footage from within Iranian territory documenting the operation.
Internal Dispute Between Defense Minister and IDF Chief of Staff
Halevi’s comments come amid growing friction between Israel’s political and military leadership. A public dispute recently erupted between Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi over high-level military appointments. Last week, a formal meeting witnessed a direct confrontation, with Katz rejecting Zamir’s proposed appointments.
In an official statement, Katz accused Zamir of acting on the advice of individuals opposed to the current government. Security officials, however, defended the Chief of Staff, asserting that he had adhered to proper professional procedures.
On Thursday, Katz and Zamir appeared together for the first time since the dispute began, attending an official ceremony without exchanging greetings or engaging in conversation. The encounter was described as notably tense.
The two are expected to meet again in a scheduled session to discuss the next phase of military operations in the Gaza Strip, including a proposed plan to take control of Gaza City. Zamir is reportedly opposed to the move, while the government remains committed to its implementation.
Broader Tensions with Security Establishment Leadership
These developments occur against the backdrop of broader disagreements between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior security officials, particularly in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 attack. Netanyahu has faced accusations of attempting to shift responsibility for the security failure onto the military and Mossad, amid concerns about the politicization of Israel’s security institutions.
