Russia responds in kind to Germany

The Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that, in accordance with the principle of reciprocity, 40 diplomats from German diplomatic missions in Russia will be expelled.
“The German ambassador has received a note declaring 40 employees of German diplomatic missions in Russia undesirable, in response to the German government’s decision,” the statement said.
The ministry also added: “The head of the German diplomatic mission in Moscow was informed of the protest against the unfriendly decision of the German government on April 4, 2022, to declare 40 employees of Russian diplomatic institutions in Germany persona non grata.”
In addition, the Russian side emphasized that it considered “unacceptable” the statement made in the context of the decision of German Foreign Minister Annalena Birbock, according to which such a move by the German authorities was motivated by a completely false claim, that the work of the aforementioned officials was aimed at Undermining “German freedom”, “the unity of German society”, as well as hints about what is happening in Ukraine.
Russia’s former president, deputy head of the country’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, said on April 5 that Russia would respond with the same force to the expulsion of its diplomats from a number of Western countries.
“Everyone knows the response: it will be just as powerful and devastating to bilateral relations,” Medvedev said in a post on his Telegram channel, adding, “Who are they being punished? First of all… themselves.”
“If this continues, it will be appropriate – as I wrote on February 26 – to forcefully close the door to Western embassies,” Medvedev said.
