Russia-Ukraine War: Trump Pushes for Deal as Putin Backs New Diplomatic Track

Russia Ukraine war diplomacy gained new momentum on September 8, 2026, after US President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin following a shuttle mission by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv, as the possibility of renewed trilateral talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States returned to the agenda.

The diplomatic push, however, coincided with a rapid return to military escalation. Russia resumed large-scale attacks on Kyiv after a temporary pause during the US envoys’ visit, while Donetsk remained at the center of the battlefield as Russian forces pressed toward Ukraine’s defensive belt around Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

The parallel developments show that the Russia Ukraine war between Moscow and Kyiv has not yet shifted from the battlefield to the negotiating table despite intensified diplomatic contacts.

Russia Ukraine War: Trump Speaks With Putin

The Kremlin said Trump told Putin during a phone call on Tuesday that he wanted the war in Ukraine brought to a swift end, which he said would open the way for a full restoration of US-Russia relations.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the two presidents discussed the results of Witkoff and Kushner’s visits to Moscow and Kyiv and viewed the latest US diplomatic initiative positively.

According to the Kremlin, Putin outlined what he believed Washington could do to help resolve the conflict and provided Trump with his assessment of the battlefield situation.

The Kremlin said Putin supported Trump’s approach and that both leaders agreed on the importance of continuing prisoner exchanges and remaining in contact.

The conversation represents the latest stage of the US diplomatic push over the Russia Ukraine war.

Zelensky Says US Envoys Presented Worthwhile Ideas

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Witkoff and Kushner had presented proposals Kyiv considers worth exploring during talks on ways to end the war.

Zelensky said Kyiv had agreed with the US envoys to continue working on the proposals before releasing further details. The latest round of diplomacy has not yet produced a final breakthrough between Russia and Ukraine.

He also said he planned to meet Trump later in September and intended to discuss a winter air-defense support package.

Territory remains one of the most difficult issues, particularly the Ukrainian-controlled parts of the Donbas that Moscow claims.

Could Russia, Ukraine and the US Hold Trilateral Talks?

Zelensky said Ukrainian, US and European representatives would meet to prepare for a possible trilateral meeting, while Moscow has said it does not rule out restarting three-way negotiations.

According to Zelensky, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland are among possible hosts for a future round of talks, with other locations also under consideration.

Grain shipments, energy infrastructure and prisoner exchanges could be included in future negotiations. Zelensky said Ukraine was prepared to seek compromises on some issues.

No final agreement has yet been announced for a Trump-Putin-Zelensky summit, and no definitive date has been set.

Fundamental differences in Russia-Ukraine relations remain over territory, the terms of ending the war and future security arrangements.

Russia Resumes Kyiv Strikes After US Envoys Leave

Alongside the diplomatic activity, Russia resumed major air attacks on the Ukrainian capital following a brief pause that coincided with the visit by Witkoff and Kushner.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said five people were killed and nearly 30 wounded, with residential buildings, a school, a clinic, warehouses and other sites damaged.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces targeted military and logistics facilities in Kyiv and the surrounding region as well as targets in the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk.

The civilian casualty figures remain attributed to Ukrainian authorities, while Moscow’s description of the targets remains a Russian Defense Ministry claim.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia continued, with Russian officials reporting damage and casualties in several regions.

Donetsk Remains the Key Battlefield

Ukraine is preparing for months of intense fighting in Donetsk, where Russian forces continue pressing toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, two major cities in Ukraine’s eastern defensive belt.

Reuters reported that Russian forces were less than 15 kilometers from the two cities, which have faced increasing drone and guided-bomb attacks.

Donetsk is also central to negotiations because Moscow claims the remaining Ukrainian-controlled territory in the region, while Kyiv rejects surrendering it.

The pressure comes alongside fighting around other strategic areas in Donetsk, including Kostiantynivka in Donetsk.

Zelensky said he expected the war to continue through the winter despite renewed diplomatic activity.

Germany Sends More Patriot Missiles to Ukraine

In another September 8 development, Germany announced that it would urgently provide additional Patriot PAC-2 interceptor missiles from its own stocks to Ukraine amid expectations of intensified Russian attacks during the winter.

Berlin also plans to increase deliveries of air-to-air missiles, drones and long-range ammunition, while Kyiv continues to ask allies for additional systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.

Air defense remains increasingly important as attacks continue against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, alongside risks surrounding strategic facilities such as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Diplomacy Advances but the Russia Ukraine War Continues

September 8 produced two contrasting tracks: accelerating US diplomacy aimed at bringing Moscow and Kyiv back into negotiations, and continued military operations, long-range strikes and fighting in Donetsk.

Assessment: The Trump-Putin call and Zelensky’s relatively positive comments about US proposals give diplomacy greater momentum, but unresolved territorial disputes, continued fighting in Donetsk and renewed attacks on Kyiv show that turning diplomatic contacts into a settlement will require a political breakthrough that has not yet occurred.

What to Watch in the Russia Ukraine War

  • Whether a date is formally set for trilateral Russia-Ukraine-US talks.
  • The outcome of upcoming meetings between US, Ukrainian and European representatives.
  • The dispute over Ukrainian-held territory in Donetsk.
  • Russia’s advance toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
  • Additional air-defense support for Ukraine ahead of winter.
