Kamel Saqr, former head of the media office in the Syrian presidency, revealed intriguing details about the final moments before the collapse of the Syrian regime.
In a podcast on “Mzeej” for Al Arabiya Network, he stated that in the days leading up to the fall of Aleppo, Bashar al-Assad was unable to reach Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite repeated attempts over three days.
Saqr pointed out that Assad had requested Russia to use the Hmeimim airbase to transport Iranian military aid, but Moscow did not respond.
He added that the Iranians informed Assad they had not received assurances from Russia regarding the passage of Iranian planes through Iraqi and Syrian airspace.
He also disclosed the deteriorating military and economic situation in Syria before the fall of Aleppo, emphasizing that the Syrian military was in a very poor condition and unable to fight.
Regarding relations with Turkey, Saqr confirmed that Assad’s refusal to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as requested by Russia, was not well received by Moscow.
In his account of the regime’s collapse, Saqr mentioned that he was the last to leave the presidential palace, where he documented Assad’s movements and departure from the country, as well as the fate of his brother, Maher al-Assad, and the state of the palace after the liberation of Damascus.
