In a remarkable night for Arab football, Saudi Arabia and Qatar officially secured their spots in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a new chapter of success for Asian and Middle Eastern teams on the global stage.
Saudi Arabia books its seventh World Cup appearance
The Saudi national team earned its qualification after a goalless draw against Iraq on Tuesday at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, during the final round of the Asian playoff qualifiers.
Backed by passionate home support, the “Green Falcons” entered the decisive match needing only a point to advance, following their vital 3–2 victory over Indonesia in the previous round. The result ensured Saudi Arabia’s seventh World Cup appearance, having previously competed in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2018, and 2022, solidifying its reputation as one of Asia’s football giants.
Meanwhile, Iraq finished second in the group and will face the UAE in a two-legged playoff this November to determine which team will progress to the intercontinental playoff for a final shot at qualifying.
Qatar joins the global stage again
On the other hand, Qatar secured its ticket to the 2026 World Cup with an impressive 2–1 victory over the UAE at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha.
Boualem Khoukhi opened the scoring in the 48th minute, while Pedro Miguel doubled the lead in the 74th. The UAE’s Sultan Al-Amiri scored a late consolation goal deep into stoppage time.
This result put Qatar at the top of its group with four points, sealing its first-ever World Cup qualification through the Asian qualifiers. The “Maroons” will now prepare for their second consecutive appearance at the global tournament, after hosting the 2022 edition on home soil.
A strong Arab presence at the 2026 World Cup
With their qualification, Saudi Arabia and Qatar join Japan, South Korea, Australia, Iran, Jordan, and Uzbekistan as Asia’s representatives in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The tournament will feature 48 teams for the first time in history, marking a new era for global football — and a proud moment for Arab fans everywhere.
