Schmeichel moves to France

The Danish goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel, goalkeeper for the English club Leicester City, moved to the French team Nice after the two clubs announced yesterday, Wednesday.

The French club did not reveal the contract period or the value of the deal to include the 35-year-old goalkeeper,

According to British reports, Schmeichel joined on a three-year contract after Nice agreed to pay $1.21 million.

“Nice is delighted to sign the goalkeeper, who reached the semi-finals of the European Championship 2020, according to Reuters,” the French club said in a statement.

Schmeichel, who joined Leicester City in 2011 from Leeds United, helped Leicester win the Premier League title surprisingly in the 2015-2016 season, as well as the FA Cup in 2021.

Schmeichel made 479 appearances for Leicester over the course of 11 seasons, and is the third most capped player in the club’s history.

The Danish goalkeeper also participated in his first international match during Denmark’s 3-0 victory over Macedonia in 2013, and played more than 80 international matches.

“After 11 incredible seasons I made the difficult decision to leave Leicester,” Schmeichel said on Twitter. “It was more than just a club for me, it was the place where I made lifelong friends and memories. It was my home.”

The Danish goalkeeper published some of his favorite memories with the club, as he published pictures of him celebrating promotion to the Premier League in 2014, as well as winning the league title two years later, as well as other memories.

The former Leicester captain added, “11 seasons… it’s been so special thanks to the people behind the scenes, who were on the pitch by my side and the fans. Your support has been amazing and I’m so grateful to each and every one of you.”

The Danish goalkeeper became the third player to join Nice this week after signing Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey on a free transfer on Monday, and defender Mattia Fetti from Empoli on Wednesday.
