Scientists Warn of Asteroid That May Strike Earth: Locations, Impact Period, and Expected Probabilities
Russian astronomer Stas Korotky announced that the asteroid 2024 YR4, discovered in December 2024 by the ATLAS Observatory in Chile, could pose a threat to Earth, with a predicted impact in December 2032.
The asteroid, with an expected diameter of around 70 meters, is likely to strike either the central part of Africa or the Atlantic Ocean, potentially causing the destruction of buildings within a 30-kilometer radius. The likelihood of impact ranges between 0.5% and 6%, meaning that there are multiple scenarios to consider, according to scientists.
It is noted that the asteroid 2024 YR4 belongs to the Apollo family, which consists of asteroids that cross Earth’s orbit, completing an orbit around the sun every four years. Scientists have confirmed that initial calculations will be refined in 2028 and 2029 as the asteroid approaches Earth, allowing for more precise estimates of its trajectory using professional telescopes.
