Significant Damage Reported After Strong Earthquake Hits Northern Chile

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the Atacama region in northern Chile on Friday evening, resulting in power outages affecting more than 20,000 people and causing structural damage in several buildings in the city of Copiapó, located north of the capital, Santiago.

According to the Chilean National Seismological Center, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth, approximately 54 kilometers south of the city of Diego de Almagro.

President Gabriel Boric stated via his official account on the platform X that residents across several areas felt strong tremors, although no injuries have been reported.

The earthquake caused broken windows and cracked walls in a number of residential buildings. Authorities have launched rapid assessment efforts to evaluate the damage and deployed emergency response teams to the affected areas.
