South Lebanon Sees Renewed Escalation as Israel Reports Explosive Drone Incident

Southern Lebanon saw a broad escalation throughout Sunday, September 27, 2026, with Israeli airstrikes, artillery shelling, heavy-weapons fire, military movements and explosions reported across several areas, while the Israeli military said an explosive-laden drone was launched overnight toward its forces deployed in the border area.

According to field information obtained by Profile News from its correspondents in southern Lebanon, strikes during the day extended from Nabatieh al-Fawqa, Mayfadoun and Kfar Tebnit to al-Mansouri, the area between Hadatha and Haris, Khiam, Mays al-Jabal and Qantara, alongside artillery shelling and heavy-weapons fire in other towns and areas.

There has been no independent confirmation of the Israeli military’s account regarding who launched the drone, and Hezbollah had not claimed responsibility for the incident by the time this updated report was prepared.

Drone incident in southern Lebanon: What did Israel say?

The Israeli military said an explosive-laden drone was launched overnight toward its forces in southern Lebanon and that the incident caused no injuries among its soldiers.

The Israeli military attributed the drone launch to Hezbollah and said it subsequently carried out strikes on sites it described as infrastructure and positions used to launch drones and anti-tank missiles.

The identity of the party that launched the drone has not been independently verified. Profile News is therefore treating this aspect of the incident as an account provided by the Israeli military.

Profile News correspondents: Strikes on Nabatieh al-Fawqa, Kfar Tebnit and Mayfadoun

Profile News correspondents in southern Lebanon reported that Israeli aircraft carried out overnight strikes targeting Nabatieh al-Fawqa and the outskirts of Kfar Tebnit and Mayfadoun.

In Mayfadoun, one of the strikes completely destroyed a house, according to field information obtained by Profile News.

Our correspondents also reported artillery shelling targeting Doha Kfar Rumman, Wadi Zibqin, the outskirts of Mazraat al-Shoumariya and al-Qusayr.

The developments were accompanied by heavy-weapons fire toward areas including Beit Yahoun, Srebine and Wadi Zibqin.

Military activity continues during the day

Military activity continued to be monitored throughout Sunday, with artillery shelling reported in additional areas of southern Lebanon, including the outskirts of Aitaroun and Blida, as well as machine-gun fire in Beit Yahoun and other border areas.

A strike was also reported on the road between Choukine and Mayfadoun, followed by a second strike in the same area.

Profile News continues to verify the types of military platforms used in some of the strikes amid heavy aerial activity and simultaneous shelling across multiple locations.

Updated field tally of September 27 strikes

As developments continued into the evening, Profile News correspondents reported that Israeli strikes hit the outskirts of Mayfadoun, Kfar Tebnit, al-Mansouri and the area between Hadatha and Haris, as well as Khiam, Mays al-Jabal and Qantara.

These areas were in addition to Nabatieh al-Fawqa, Mayfadoun and Kfar Tebnit, which were struck earlier in the day, reflecting a widening geographic scope of attacks throughout Sunday.

According to the field tally compiled by Profile News correspondents, artillery shelling affected Wadi Zibqin, Wadi al-Salouqi, Hadatha, al-Mansouri, Srayyine, Houla, Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, the Khiam plain, Kfar Tebnit, Arnoun, Aitaroun, Haris and Baraachit.

Apache helicopter fire and explosions in southern towns

Profile News correspondents also reported fire from Apache helicopters toward Mayfadoun and Qabrikha during Sunday’s developments.

Explosions carried out by Israeli forces were also reported in Beit Yahoun and Majdal Zoun, according to field information obtained by Profile News from its correspondents in southern Lebanon.

Profile News continues to monitor for additional information regarding the nature of the targets and damage resulting from these operations.

Why does the drone incident matter?

The significance of the development lies in Israel’s direct linkage of the drone incident to the strikes that followed, adding a new element to the military escalation recorded during the day.

It remains important, however, to distinguish between documented field developments and military claims. The strikes, shelling and movements on the ground were documented by Profile News correspondents, while attribution of the drone launch currently rests on the Israeli account.

Any subsequent statement from the Lebanese side or Hezbollah regarding the incident could add new information to the understanding of what happened and how the Israeli strikes that followed are interpreted.

Escalation expands across southern Lebanon

Sunday’s field tally shows that military activity spread across a wider area, from Nabatieh and its surroundings to towns in the Marjayoun and Bint Jbeil districts and other parts of southern Lebanon.

The September 27 developments followed a day that also saw airstrikes, artillery shelling and explosions across wide areas, including al-Mansouri, Jabal al-Rafi, Wadi Zibqin, Baraachit, Mays al-Jabal and Khiam, developments covered in Profile News’ September 26, 2026 daily report.

The continuation of strikes from one day to the next indicates that tensions remain high, with military activity recurring across a growing number of towns and areas in southern Lebanon.

What remains unresolved?

  • The identity of the party that launched the drone cited by the Israeli military, in the absence of independent confirmation or a claim of responsibility from Hezbollah.
  • The full official casualty and damage toll from Sunday’s strikes and shelling across the affected areas.
  • The extent of damage caused by Apache helicopter fire in Mayfadoun and Qabrikha.
  • The scale of damage resulting from the explosions reported in Beit Yahoun and Majdal Zoun.
  • Whether the level of military escalation will continue or ease on September 28.
