Ceasefire and Efforts to Contain Escalation

In this context, U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack stated that all parties in Sweida Governorate have reached a ceasefire agreement that took effect at 5:00 PM local time. Barrack emphasized that a lasting de-escalation requires a clear agreement to end violence and ensure the protection of civilians. He noted that the next critical step in this process is a comprehensive exchange of hostages and detainees, for which logistical arrangements are currently underway.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the death of 1,017 individuals in Sweida during the recent clashes, including 194 who were executed in the field. The organization noted the discovery of bodies in streets and homes. Although security forces have been deployed in certain areas, armed groups—some allegedly affiliated with local tribes and others wearing official military and police uniforms—have reportedly continued carrying out killings, looting, and property destruction. The towns of Shahba and Ariqah in northern Sweida have witnessed ongoing intense clashes, according to the same source.
