Tensions Rise Between Egypt and the UK Following Activist’s Arrest and Embassy Closure
The British Embassy in Cairo announced on Sunday the temporary closure of its main building, following the removal of security barriers by Egyptian authorities surrounding its premises in the Garden City district of central Cairo.
In an official statement, the embassy noted that the removal of concrete barriers prompted the decision to temporarily close the facility while evaluating the security implications of the change. It added that the situation is under review to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.
Egyptian authorities had earlier removed the security structures as part of a broader plan aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in the streets around the British Embassy.
Diplomatic and Security Background
The latest development comes just days after UK authorities released Egyptian activist Ahmed Abdelkader “Mido”, who had been detained after reportedly confronting individuals attempting to breach the Egyptian Embassy in London last week.
In response, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone call with UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, during which he stressed that Cairo is closely following the circumstances surrounding Mido’s detention. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of clarifying the reasons behind the arrest and the outcome of ongoing investigations.
The minister also instructed the Egyptian Embassy in London to engage with relevant British authorities to provide consular assistance to the Egyptian national and to expedite efforts to secure his release.
Abdelatty had previously stated that Egypt reserves the right to reciprocate toward countries that fail to provide adequate protection for Egyptian diplomatic missions, in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, following recent incidents involving the Egyptian Embassy in London.
