The Five Reasons Hindering the Qatari Gas Pipeline Through Syria and Turkey
The Russian newspaper Vzglyad published a report by “Gevorg Mirzayan” on the reasons preventing Ankara from achieving its geopolitical ambitions after the fall of Assad, which was not enough to build the Qatari gas pipeline from Qatar to Europe.
Mirzayan attributed this to reasons related to Syria’s own unstable conditions, which pose risks to the pipeline and its operation, in light of the high project costs. Additionally, Qatar is inclined to export its gas to East Asian markets at higher prices, which would lead it to reject the project.
The difficulties will increase, as they are not limited to “Syria’s threatened stability” or “Qatar’s willingness,” but also depend on “Saudi Arabia’s approval,” considering it would be the longest transit country for the pipeline and has recently had tense relations with Qatar.
With the “decline in manufacturing decisions” in the old world, consumption decisions will become unclear and will not solely rely on securing the transit line despite its difficulties, unlike the East Asian markets that consume Qatari gas, in addition to Washington exporting liquefied gas to Europe.
