The Health Effects of Sleep Deprivation on the Body

Simba, a company specializing in sleep technology, conducted a study on 2,175 adults in the UK to examine the impact of sleep habits on health and appearance. The data was processed using artificial intelligence to compare individuals who sleep more than 7 hours with those who sleep less.
Physical Effects of Sleep Deprivation
The study found that lack of sleep leads to pale skin, skin inflammation, bloating, and brittle nails. Lisa Artis, Deputy CEO of The Sleep Charity, a partner of Simba, stated that sleep deprivation reduces blood flow to the skin, affecting its glow. Additionally, increased cortisol levels worsen skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
The Relationship Between Sleep, Weight, and Appetite
Researchers found that 26% of those sleeping less than 7 hours suffer from weight gain, while 32% experience bloating. Artis explained that sleep deprivation disrupts the hormones “ghrelin” and “leptin,” leading to increased hunger and reduced satiety. Fat storage patterns also differ by gender, with women storing more fat in the hips and thighs, while men accumulate more abdominal fat.
Unexpected Effects
The study also highlighted that lack of sleep affects body temperature regulation, causing cold hands and feet due to circadian rhythm disturbances, leading to discomfort.
Medical Recommendations
According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night, depending on age, health, and individual factors. Experts recommend maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, avoiding caffeine before bedtime, and practicing relaxation techniques like meditation or reading.
