Syrian Foreign Ministry Statement on the Israeli Operation in Beit Jann, Rural Damascus
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Israeli attack on the town of Beit Jann in rural Damascus, noting that the Israeli forces’ incursion and subsequent shelling resulted in casualties and extensive material damage.
In its statement, the ministry said that the continuation of such operations constitutes a “threat to regional stability,” calling on the UN Security Council, the United Nations, and the Arab League to take urgent steps to ensure respect for international law and Syria’s territorial sovereignty. The ministry affirmed that Syria will continue to act within the framework of international law to defend its citizens.
Meanwhile, Syrian sources reported that the death toll in Beit Jann has risen to 13, in addition to dozens of injuries, including women and children. The Syrian Arab News Agency indicated that some of the victims’ bodies were transferred to Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Damascus, while the town experienced a movement of residents seeking safer areas. The Syrian Civil Defense clarified that its teams were unable to enter the town due to targeting of any movement toward the area, which hindered rescue and medical operations, confirming that their teams remained on the outskirts.
On the other side, the Israeli army announced that it conducted a security operation based on intelligence information, stating that the operation targeted suspects in Beit Jann associated with an Islamic group. The army reported that its forces came under fire during the operation, resulting in six soldiers being wounded. The army spokesperson added that air support was provided to ground units, confirming the completion of the operation, the arrest of all suspects, and the transfer of injured soldiers to hospitals.
Israeli media provided additional details about the operation, reporting that units from Reserve Brigade 55 and Division 210 entered the town around 3:00 a.m. to arrest two brothers suspected of involvement in armed activities. An exchange of fire occurred during the forces’ departure, prompting air support and strikes on locations within the area. The reports also mentioned that a military vehicle became immobilized inside Syrian territory before being targeted from the air. Later, Israeli forces released footage purportedly showing airstrikes in the vicinity of Beit Jann.
