The Republican People’s Party Calls on Its Supporters for Economic and Commercial Boycott in Turkey
The Republican People’s Party, Turkey’s largest opposition party, has called on its supporters to engage in an economic and commercial boycott in protest against the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
In response, official authorities criticized the call. Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that the boycott aims to “halt local production,” while Turkish Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç asserted that “the Turkish people will not respond to such a call.”
The Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office also announced the opening of an investigation into this call, targeting individuals who advocated for it through social media and traditional media outlets, including the opposition leader and head of the Republican People’s Party, Özgür Özel.
Turkish judicial sources indicated that those harmed by the boycott could file lawsuits against the organizers due to the damages caused.
It is worth noting that Turkey has witnessed widespread protests in recent days following the detention of İmamoğlu, who faces charges related to corruption and supporting terrorism.
