The Syrian Minister of Justice made statements about the implementation of Islamic Sharia provisions in Syria.

The Syrian Minister of Justice in the new government, Shadi Al-Waisi, affirmed during a television interview that the Syrian revolution emerged to demand freedom, justice, and equality among all segments of the Syrian people. He emphasized that sectarian rhetoric is now criminalized. He also mentioned that the upcoming constitution will not be entirely new but will consider the aspirations of the Syrian people in all their diversity.

When asked about his previous statements regarding the application of Sharia law, Al-Waisi responded: “About 90% of the Syrian population is Muslim, and the parliament will be formed by the people. The application of Sharia will play a central role through representatives who embody Islamic principles. If 90% of the population wishes to vote on something, we would say it is the decision of the people, not an imposition by the state.”

He pointed out that the Druze community has its own specialized courts, known as “brotherhood courts,” and that Christians also have their own courts. Islam has established frameworks for these communities to practice their beliefs and levels of religiosity.

Al-Waisi clarified that repeated attacks on the religious symbols of different communities are deliberate acts aimed at creating divisions and instigating strife within the country. He stressed that security agencies are monitoring such activities and that those responsible will be held accountable.

The Syrian Minister of Justice also denied all statements attributed to him about banning women from judicial work. He confirmed that this matter is under the purview of the Supreme Judicial Council and stated that women will have a key role in the Ministry of Justice.
