The head of the Syrian Network for Human Rights, Fadel Abdul Ghani, stated that despite the release of thousands of detainees from the prisons of the deposed regime, 112,414 people remain forcibly disappeared in Syria.

In a statement published on its website on Saturday, the Syrian Network said: “At least 112,414 individuals are still forcibly disappeared by the Assad regime, despite the release of thousands of detainees in recent weeks.”

The Network estimated the number of those released after the regime’s prisons were opened to be around “24,200 individuals.” It noted that its database, as of last August, indicates that the total number of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons exceeds 136,000.

The Network called on the international community to intensify its efforts to ensure justice and work towards strengthening the protection of human rights in Syria, especially after the discovery of new mass graves containing the remains of thousands of victims.
