The Syrian Transitional Government refutes the Amnesty International report on the events in the Syrian coast.

In a press release issued by the Syrian Transitional Government regarding the Amnesty International report on the events in the Syrian coast during March of last year, as reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA):

The statement reads as follows:

“The Government of the Syrian Arab Republic has followed with interest the report issued by Amnesty International on the events in the Syrian coast that took place in March of last year. The report’s initial conclusions will be left for the National Independent Committee for Investigation and Fact-Finding to evaluate, in accordance with the mandate, independence, and broad powers granted to it by a presidential decision.

Believing in the importance of upholding justice and promoting transparency, the government wishes to highlight some methodological observations that should not be overlooked over time. Among the most notable observations is the tendency of some human rights reports to ignore the context in which events occurred or to downplay its significance, which affects the findings reached. The unfortunate events on the coast began with a treacherous and premeditated attack carried out by remnants of the previous regime, targeting the public security forces and the army. During this attack, violations were committed against the residents of the area, sometimes with sectarian motives. As a result, the authority of the state temporarily diminished after the martyrdom of hundreds of personnel, leading to a security void followed by acts of revenge, excesses, and violations. The National Committee has taken it upon itself to investigate these violations and to release its findings within thirty days.

The Syrian government also emphasizes that its efforts and readiness to cooperate with human rights organizations and allow them access to all parts of the country have been praised by the International Investigative Committee. These efforts align with a comprehensive national reconciliation approach, based on transitional justice that applies exclusively to perpetrators. The state and its institutions remain the primary reference in this framework, with no acts of vengeance.”

The Syrian government concluded its statement by affirming its full responsibility for protecting all its citizens, regardless of their affiliations, and ensuring their future in a state of equal citizenship in rights and duties
