The Truth Behind the Imminent Egyptian Military Strike: What is the Potential Target?

Egypt has returned to the spotlight amidst increasing media speculation, the latest being Israeli reports suggesting that Egypt is preparing for an upcoming military strike to rescue its faltering economy. These reports indicate that Yemen may be the target of such action.

Anticipated Egyptian Military Move in Yemen

Israeli reports highlight a forthcoming Egyptian military move, focusing on serious preparations in Cairo to intervene in Yemen. These reports link Egypt’s potential military action to its ongoing economic crises, particularly following significant losses exceeding $7 billion in Suez Canal revenues, leading to a decline in the Egyptian pound and increased economic pressures.

According to Israeli analyst Yehoshua Meiri Lichtner, an imminent Egyptian airstrike is deemed necessary to rescue the deteriorating economic situation and safeguard Egypt’s strategic interests in the Red Sea.

Egyptian Skepticism Denies Israeli Allegations

Official statements from Egyptian military and security officials, published by Profile News last month, affirmed that the instability in Syria poses a direct threat to Egypt’s national security. Cairo views any further collapse in the region as a potential risk to extend instability to its borders.

These statements also referenced Egypt’s ongoing mediation efforts to end the war in Gaza as part of its broader initiative to bolster regional stability, steering clear of direct military conflicts that could weaken its internal position.

In light of this, new statements from Egyptian military and defense officials have denied the accuracy of Israeli reports regarding a potential Egyptian military strike in Yemen.

Former Deputy Intelligence Chief General Mohamed Rashad, who spent over a year in Yemen during his service as an intelligence officer, asserted that any military intervention in Yemen would be unproductive. He pointed out Egypt’s policy of avoiding involvement in complex conflicts, particularly given past experiences that demonstrated Yemen’s challenging terrain and tribal affiliations as a quagmire for any military force.

Rashad added that an airstrike would not achieve the desired results, emphasizing that Cairo prefers diplomatic efforts to reach political agreements with relevant parties, including Iran and the Houthis, to safeguard its interests in the Red Sea and protect its national security from potential threats.

The Yemeni Crisis: Houthis and International Conflict

Iranian affairs expert Ahmed Lashin noted that the conflict in Yemen is tied to broader regional and international tensions beyond just a confrontation with the Houthis.

Lashin explained that the Red Sea has become a battleground for global powers like the United States and China, placing Cairo in a sensitive position requiring extreme caution.

He added, “Any Egyptian military action in Yemen would amount to being drawn into a complex conflict, especially given the international struggle for influence in the region.”

Egypt’s Economic Situation

Earlier, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that Egypt had managed to meet its financial obligations amounting to $39 billion, stating that the country’s economy remains capable of withstanding economic pressures under comprehensive plans across various sectors.

Meanwhile, Israeli reports pointed to an intelligence gap on Israel’s part regarding the confrontation in Yemen, raising concerns about the potential implications of any military escalation in the region.
