Romantic love is often depicted in popular culture as an extraordinary experience that can change a person’s life, and psychological research has documented its impact on behavior and mental health.
However, a fundamental question remained unanswered for many years: how many times do individuals actually experience this type of love in their lifetime? Films such as “Titanic” and “The Notebook” have reinforced the idea that great love occurs only once and that each person has a single “soulmate,” a notion widely ingrained in public perception.
Recent research from the Kinsey Institute suggests that this perception does not necessarily reflect reality.
Average Twice in a Lifetime
Researchers found that most people experience romantic love twice on average during their lives, rather than just once as often portrayed in popular media. The study, published in *Interpersona: An International Journal on Personal Relationships*, is the first large-scale research effort to directly quantify the number of times individuals experience romantic love.
Large Sample Size
The study surveyed over 10,000 single adults aged 18 to 99, asking a direct question: “How many times have you fallen in romantic love in your life?”
Results showed that 14% of participants had never experienced romantic love, 28% experienced it once, 30% twice, 17% three times, and 11% four times or more.
According to Dr. Amanda Geisterman, who led the study, this was the first time participants were asked directly about the number of times they fell in love, highlighting that romantic love occurs a limited number of times for most individuals.
Minor Differences and Implications
Older adults reported slightly more experiences of romantic love compared to younger participants, indicating that such experiences can occur later in life, although most happen at a younger age.
Men reported slightly more experiences than women, but these differences were considered minor.
The study concluded that romantic love is common in principle, meaning most individuals experience it at least once in their lifetime.
At the same time, the findings indicate that this experience does not occur frequently for the same person; the average number of romantic love experiences is about twice in a lifetime.
Researchers note that these findings may help doctors and therapists contextualize romantic experiences while emphasizing the value of other forms of love.
