Trump and Putin in Alaska… Messages and an Invitation for the Next Meeting
On August 15, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska for a three-hour summit described as “constructive,” but without reaching a final agreement on the Ukraine conflict.
Putin emphasized that Russia and the United States are “neighboring countries” and that Alaska is “part of their shared history.” He stressed that any solution to Ukraine must be “sustainable,” addressing Russia’s security concerns while also ensuring Ukraine’s security (AP News). He expressed hope that European capitals would not obstruct the progress made, calling the understandings reached “a pivot point” for resolving the conflict and restoring bilateral relations.
Trump stated, “There is no deal until there’s a deal” (The Sun), but acknowledged “progress” on certain issues, adding that he would likely meet Putin again “soon.” At the end of the summit, Putin said in English, “Next time will be in Moscow,” referring to the upcoming meeting.
The talks were held in a “3-on-3” format, attended by senior figures from both sides, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio. Putin received an official welcome in Alaska that included an aerial display of B-2 and F-35 aircraft, along with a red-carpet reception at the airport.
Despite the positive tone, there was no mention of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, and both leaders declined to take questions from reporters after the joint press conference (The Times).
