Turkish Foreign Ministry Calls for Equal Rights for Kurds in Syria and Reaffirms Support for Syria’s Territorial Integrity

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stressed the need to grant Kurds in Syria the rights they were denied under the previous regime, emphasizing the importance of treating all Syrians as equal citizens.

In a press statement, Fidan noted that these issues were discussed during his meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara in Damascus last week. He pointed out that the issue of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the new Syrian administration’s cooperation with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was the main focus of the talks.

The Turkish minister confirmed that Turkey had expressed its position regarding the intentions and capabilities of the SDF, particularly in relation to their control over energy resources. Both sides also discussed the steps the SDF plans to take in implementing the agreement with Damascus, as well as the fate of foreign fighters who joined the group. Fidan stressed the need for them to disarm and leave Syria.

He also mentioned that resolving the presence of armed groups and their connection to the central government would contribute to strengthening the unity of the country. Fidan reiterated Turkey’s support for Syria’s unity and territorial integrity and stressed the importance of the central government exerting full control over all Syrian territories.
