U.S. Congresswoman Voices Support for Ukraine Protests Following Controversial Anti-Corruption Law Signed by Zelensky

U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican member of the House of Representatives, expressed support for recent protests in Kyiv, which erupted following the signing of a controversial law by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The legislation has drawn criticism over its potential impact on the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies.

In a post on her X (formerly Twitter) account, Greene wrote: “Massive protests have broken out in Kyiv against President Zelensky, who is being accused of refusing to negotiate peace and end the war.” She added: “Good job, people of Ukraine! Remove him from office! The U.S. must stop funding this war and sending weapons!”

Details of the New Law and Emerging Criticism

According to media reports, President Zelensky signed the law late Tuesday, in what has been described as a discreet process. The legislation grants broad new powers to the Prosecutor General, particularly in overseeing major corruption cases—powers previously held by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).

The law was reportedly passed swiftly through the Ukrainian parliament, prompting concern from local and international organizations. Critics argue that the changes could undermine the autonomy of key anti-corruption institutions, which were established with international support following the events of 2014 and have been seen as central to Ukraine’s governance reform efforts.

Zelensky Responds: “No Foreign Influence on Anti-Corruption Bodies”

In response, President Zelensky defended the law in a post on X, asserting that Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies will continue to operate independently and free of external influence, especially from Russia.

He stated that the aim of the reform is to ensure justice and expedite progress in long-standing corruption cases that have seen little to no resolution over the years.
