UK Restores Diplomatic Relations with Syria: Foreign Secretary Makes First Visit to Damascus in 14 Years
In a significant diplomatic development, the United Kingdom has announced the restoration of diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic. The announcement came during a visit by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy to the Syrian capital, Damascus—marking the first official visit by a UK foreign secretary in 14 years.
The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral dialogue and cooperation. Foreign Secretary Lammy was received by Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, at the Presidential Palace, with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani also in attendance. The discussions focused on ways to advance relations between the two countries, as well as recent regional and international developments.

The British foreign secretary reaffirmed the UK’s support for the Syrian government in meeting its stated commitments, emphasizing the importance of partnership in various sectors, particularly agriculture and education. He also announced an additional £94.5 million humanitarian aid package to support the Syrian people and address urgent needs.
In turn, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani received an official invitation to visit London. Both sides agreed to work toward reopening the Syrian embassy in the United Kingdom and to establish a joint Syrian–British economic council to promote cooperation on development and economic initiatives.
This visit represents a notable shift in UK–Syria relations after more than a decade of diplomatic suspension, opening the door to a new phase of formal engagement and bilateral cooperation.
