Video from Syrian Ministry of Interior Reveals Confessions of Suspect in Attempt to Target Religious Minorities in the Country
The Syrian Ministry of Interior published a video showing the confessions of a suspect involved in an attempt to target the Sayyida Zaynab shrine in rural Damascus. The suspect admitted to his involvement in planning the operation with the aim of inciting sectarian strife among the country’s various communities and stirring public and international opinion, by carrying out attacks targeting religious minorities such as Christians, Shia, and Alawites.
It is noteworthy that on January 11th, Syrian intelligence, in cooperation with the General Security Directorate, thwarted an attempt by ISIS to bomb the Sayyida Zaynab shrine, one of the most important Islamic shrines, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
Later, the Washington Post reported that the United States provided intelligence information that contributed to uncovering these plans.
