Warnings Over “Suitcase Viruses”: Concerning Spread of Chikungunya and Oropouche in Europe and the UK

Health authorities in the United Kingdom and Europe have issued escalating warnings about the spread of so-called “suitcase viruses”—deadly tropical infections such as Chikungunya fever and Oropouche fever—which are believed to be transported by travelers and airborne mosquitoes aboard flights from affected regions.

Unprecedented Spread in the UK and Europe

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), England recorded 73 confirmed cases of Chikungunya between January and June 2025—marking the highest number reported in a six-month period. This figure notably exceeds the 27 cases documented during the same timeframe in the previous year. Most infections were concentrated in London and associated with travel to Sri Lanka, India, and Mauritius.

Meanwhile, Oropouche fever was documented for the first time in the UK, detected in a traveler returning from Brazil. This virus is endemic to the Amazon region and has recently appeared in Asia and Europe, following earlier outbreaks in France and Italy.

Defining “Suitcase Viruses”

The term refers to viruses carried by travelers or through insects hidden within luggage or aboard aircraft. Key examples include:

Chikungunya Fever: A mosquito-borne virus causing sudden fever and severe joint pain, which may linger for months, and possesses the potential for fatal complications in rare cases.

Oropouche Fever: A viral illness manifesting with flu-like symptoms and, in rare instances, may progress to encephalitis.

Professor Simon Clarke, a microbiology specialist at the University of Reading, attributes the spread to shifts in British travel habits—especially to warmer destinations in Africa and Southeast Asia—as well as broader climate change. He notes that the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) has been observed in Southeast England, potentially facilitating future local transmission.

Scientific Concerns Regarding Local Transmission

Professor Paul Hunter of the University of East Anglia assessed the immediate risk of infection via aircraft-transported mosquitoes into the UK as “low.” Still, he emphasized that rising temperatures may prolong mosquito survival and raise the likelihood of outbreaks.

 > “Reports of locally acquired infections in several European areas this year are concerning,” he said. “Cases may continue to increase, particularly while the mosquito season remains active in the coming weeks.”

Global Outbreaks Raise Alarm among Health Authorities

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports that since January 2025, over 240,000 chikungunya cases and 90 deaths have been recorded across 16 countries—including China, Mauritius, Réunion, and Hong Kong. In China’s Foshan, more than 10,000 infections led authorities to impose restrictions and initiate insecticide spraying in attempts to suppress the outbreak.

Is the UK at Risk?

To date, there is no evidence of widespread local transmission of Chikungunya or Oropouche within the UK, as the mosquito species that transmit these diseases are not endemic there. Nonetheless, experts caution that international travel and warming climates could alter this situation in the near future.

Preventive Advice for Travelers

The UK Health Security Agency advises travelers to:

Regularly use insect repellent in affected regions.

Wear long-sleeved clothing and trousers.

Sleep under mosquito nets or in protected environments.

Seek medical attention upon return if experiencing fever or joint pain.
