Yemen War: Government Forces Push Toward Al-Bayda as Houthi Attacks Hit Saudi Arabia

Yemen war entered a new phase of escalation as government forces expanded military operations in Al-Bayda, Al-Jawf, Taiz and other areas, while Yemeni officials said the stated objective now includes retaking Sanaa. At the same time, the conflict spilled further into Saudi territory through missile and drone attacks attributed to the Houthis.
The developments follow several days of rapidly escalating fighting that disrupted a period of relative calm across several fronts, with mounting casualties and displacement alongside the expansion of hostilities into southern Saudi Arabia.
Yemen War Expands Toward Al-Bayda and Al-Jawf
Forces affiliated with Yemen’s internationally recognized government announced an expansion of operations against the Houthis, with a particular focus on Al-Bayda and Al-Jawf, alongside continued fighting in Taiz and along the western coast.
Yemeni Assistant Defense Minister Samir al-Sabri said a decision to retake Sanaa had been “made,” while military officials said government forces were seeking to recapture areas under Houthi control and open routes toward the capital.
Al-Jawf is particularly important because of routes connecting it with Sanaa, Saada and the Saudi border, while Al-Bayda occupies a central position linking several Yemeni governorates.
Government forces said they advanced toward the outskirts of Dhi Na’im district in Al-Bayda and carried out strikes against Houthi positions and reinforcements on several fronts.
Houthis Give Rival Account of Al-Jawf Fighting
The Houthis, meanwhile, said they had repelled a large-scale advance by Saudi-backed forces toward the Al-Labnat mountains in Al-Jawf province.
A Houthi official claimed that the group targeted military reinforcements in Al-Jawf with ballistic missiles, causing losses among personnel and military vehicles.
No independent information was available to verify the battlefield results or casualty figures announced by either side. The claims therefore remain attributed to the parties that issued them.
Yemen War Drives Casualties and Displacement Higher
On the humanitarian front, the World Health Organization said around 900 people had been killed or wounded since Thursday as fighting intensified, with most casualties concentrated in Taiz and areas along the western coast.
Estimates also indicated that around 21,000 people, or nearly 3,000 families, had been displaced from Taiz alone, amid concerns that casualty and displacement figures could rise if the fighting continues.
The growing humanitarian toll is one of the clearest indicators of the risks associated with the current escalation, particularly if military operations expand toward more densely populated areas.
September 8 Update: Houthi Attacks Hit Southern Saudi Arabia
The consequences of the escalation extended into Saudi Arabia, where Saudi authorities said a series of Houthi attacks struck areas in the south of the kingdom and wounded 73 people, including women and children.
According to Saudi authorities, the attacks affected Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, causing fires and disruptions at several facilities, including sites linked to energy and public services.
Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry said measures had been taken to secure facilities and maintain operations, while the Saudi-led coalition described the Houthi escalation as a dangerous development and pledged a response.
The attacks inside Saudi territory represent a development extending beyond the course of Yemen’s internal fighting, with military escalation in Al-Bayda, Al-Jawf and Taiz now unfolding alongside cross-border attacks.
Houthis Accuse Saudi Arabia of Striking Al-Jawf Detention Facility
In a separate account, the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out an airstrike on a detention facility in Al-Hazm, Al-Jawf province. They said at least seven people, including a child, were killed and others wounded.
No Saudi statement confirming responsibility for the reported strike appeared in the available coverage. The casualty figures and attribution therefore remain claims made by Houthi authorities and have not been independently confirmed.
Yemen War Spills Beyond the Country’s Internal Front Lines
The expansion of government operations toward Al-Bayda and Al-Jawf has coincided with Houthi attacks inside Saudi Arabia, increasing the risk that the latest round of fighting could develop from an internal Yemeni confrontation into a broader regional security crisis.
The escalation also puts the security of Saudi border areas, economic infrastructure and energy facilities among the direct consequences of the conflict, alongside the worsening humanitarian situation inside Yemen.
Assessment: Declaring the goal of retaking Sanaa does not mean government forces are on the verge of entering the capital, but it clearly signals a significant increase in their stated military objectives. Al-Jawf and Al-Bayda will be among the key fronts determining whether the campaign can produce a lasting change on the ground, while expanded Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia increase the risk of a wider confrontation.
What to Watch in the Yemen War
- The extent of government advances in Al-Bayda and Al-Jawf.
- Whether military operations move closer to routes leading toward Sanaa.
- The Houthis’ ability to halt the offensive or launch counterattacks.
- The possibility of a new Saudi response to attacks targeting southern Saudi Arabia.
- Changes in casualty and displacement figures in Taiz and along the western coast.
