Zelensky Questions the Seriousness of Putin’s Easter Ceasefire Announcement

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed skepticism over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a ceasefire in observance of Easter. In a post on the social media platform X, Zelensky accused Putin of “playing with human lives,” pointing out that while the Russian president was declaring a ceasefire, air raid sirens were sounding across Ukraine, warning of ongoing aerial attacks.

Zelensky wrote: “As for Putin’s latest attempt to play with human lives, at this very moment, air raid sirens are sounding across Ukraine.” He added that drone attacks in Ukrainian airspace reveal the true stance of the Russian president towards Easter and human life. Although Zelensky did not explicitly state whether Ukraine would honor the proposed truce, several media outlets interpreted his remarks as a rejection of the ceasefire announced by Moscow.

A Test of Intentions

Zelensky’s comments came in response to a statement issued by the Kremlin’s press service earlier on Saturday, in which Putin declared a humanitarian truce starting at 6:00 p.m. local time and lasting until midnight on Sunday. Putin ordered a suspension of all military actions during this period and expressed his expectation that Ukraine would observe the ceasefire as well. He emphasized that Russian forces must remain ready to repel any potential violations or provocations by Ukraine.

Putin also stated that Ukraine’s behavior during the truce would serve as a measure of its willingness to seek a peaceful resolution. He reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to engage in negotiations and welcomed international efforts, including from the United States and China, to help achieve a fair settlement to the conflict.

Russian Advances on the Ground

In a related development, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday that its forces had regained control of the village of Oleshnya in the Kursk border region from Ukrainian troops. The ministry’s statement indicated that the offensive led to the liberation of the small village, bringing Russian forces closer to full control of the Kursk region.

Meanwhile, international media reported that a Ukrainian drone strike on a vehicle in the Kursk region resulted in the death of a woman and injuries to a man and a child.
