Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant: Turkey Prepares to Launch First Reactor in 2026
Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Continues Construction Ahead of Full Operation
The first reactor at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is scheduled to begin operation in 2026. The facility is under construction in Mersin Province, southern Turkey. Turkey launched the initial phase of the project in April 2023, marking it as the country’s first nuclear power plant and one of the largest strategic investments in the energy sector.
Construction continues under an agreement signed between Turkey and Russia in 2010, which stipulates that all units of the plant will be fully operational by 2028. Anton Dydusenko, Chairman of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Company, stated that 2026 is expected to see the launch of the first reactor as part of the project.

Dydusenko highlighted that the Akkuyu plant represents a large-scale direct investment in the Turkish economy, noting the participation of around 2,000 Turkish companies in construction work. Additionally, 350 contracting firms are currently involved in construction, supply, and related services, with most materials used in the project produced locally in Turkey, contributing to energy security and job creation.
