A Recent Study: Why Do Some People Remember Their Dreams More Than Others?

A new study conducted by researchers at the IMT School for Advanced Studies in Lucca, Italy, in collaboration with the University of Camerino, investigated the factors influencing individuals’ ability to recall dreams.

The study, which took place between 2020 and 2024, involved over 200 participants aged 18 to 70, who recorded their dreams for 15 days. Their sleep data and cognitive abilities were also measured using wearable devices and psychological tests.

Key Factors

The results revealed that individuals with a positive attitude toward dreams and a tendency for mind-wandering were more likely to remember them. Longer periods of light sleep were also linked to increased dream recall. Younger participants exhibited higher recall rates, whereas older individuals were more prone to “white dreams,” where they sensed having dreamt but couldn’t remember any details.

Researchers also observed a decline in dream recall during winter compared to spring, suggesting that environmental factors might influence this phenomenon.

Implications for Mental Health

Giulio Bernardi, the study’s lead author, emphasized that dream recall is not random but is influenced by personal traits, cognitive abilities, and sleep dynamics. Researcher Valentina Elsì added that the collected data would serve as a crucial reference for studying pathological changes in dreams and their role in diagnosis and psychological prediction.
