An international movement towards Iran is of Greek origin

Today, Thursday, the Greek government and the Greek shipping sector called for international action to release the crews of two oil tankers detained by Iran.

Greek Maritime Trade Minister Ioannis Plakiotakis told reporters: “We call on all countries to act in order to end this unacceptable incident and to ensure that it does not happen again.”

Plakiotakis also added that the two tanker seizure incidents that occurred last week posed “a threat to the safety of shipping and trade and also cast a shadow over Greece’s largest shipping fair, Posidonia, which opened on Monday with the participation of more than 1,900 companies from nearly 90 countries.”

Speaking at Posidonia’s opening press conference on Thursday, Melinatraflos, president of the Greek Shipowners’ Association, said that some of the sailors detained by Iran were young men on their first shipping assignment.

“The global shipping community must mobilize all countries, this situation must end,” she added.

Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Ministry responded to the statements of its French and German counterparts about Tehran’s seizure of two oil tankers carrying the Greek flag in the Gulf waters.

In a statement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that his country “strongly rejects the issuance of such unilateral and unjustified statements, which seem to have become a well-established habit.”

Khatibzadeh also called on the two European countries to support “judicial processes based on international law” aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation and maritime security instead of escaping forward and supporting violations committed by Greek ships, he said.

And the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced last week that it had seized two Greek oil tankers, “Delta Psweden” and “Prudent and Rior”, off the coast of Bandar Lanka and Asalouyeh.

This came in response to Greece’s earlier arrest of an Iranian-flagged oil tanker at the request of Washington, and its cargo was confiscated by the US authorities.
