Arab and Muslim leaders participating in the emergency Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha addressed the recent Israeli action involving Qatar, describing it as a serious development affecting prospects for regional peace.
The final statement noted that any action targeting the Qatari territory of a United Nations member state is viewed as impacting all Arab and Islamic countries.
Support for Mediation Efforts
The leaders reaffirmed their full solidarity with Qatar, emphasizing support for the country in safeguarding its sovereignty and the security of its citizens, while acknowledging Qatar’s handling of the situation. The statement also renewed support for mediation efforts led by Doha in coordination with Egypt and the United States regarding Gaza, highlighting that targeting residential premises for negotiation delegations could disrupt diplomatic processes and affect international mediation efforts.
Key Positions and Decisions
The final statement included several positions, notably welcoming the Arab League’s decision on the “Shared Vision for Security and Cooperation in the Region,” warning against plans to establish new realities in the Palestinian territories, and opposing population displacement policies. It also called for the expedited implementation of the Arab plan for Gaza reconstruction and highlighted the implications of any decisions to annex occupied territories.
The statement further urged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to coordinate on suspending Israel’s membership in the United Nations and welcomed the adoption of the “New York Declaration” on the two-state solution, as well as the upcoming international conference scheduled for 22 September.
Role of the International Community
The leaders emphasized the need to intensify efforts to recognize an independent State of Palestine within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, while supporting the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and ensuring the presence of Jerusalem residents on their land. The statement also called on the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities, including supporting the implementation of International Criminal Court orders related to violations affecting the Palestinian people.
