Avalanche Near 2026 Olympic Sites Kills Skiers in Courmayeur, Italy
Two skiers were killed and a third critically injured after an avalanche struck an off-piste ski route in the town of Courmayeur in northern Italy. The incident occurred in the “Coloir Vissis” passage in the upper Val Veny area, on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc massif bordering France and Switzerland, while the victims were practicing off-piste skiing outside designated slopes.
The Italian Mountain Rescue Corps reported extensive participation in search and rescue operations, involving 15 specialized teams, three trained dog units, and two helicopters. The third victim was initially transported to the hospital in critical condition before later being pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims.

The Italian town of Courmayeur is located about 200 kilometers northwest of Milan, one of the host cities for the 2026 Winter Olympics – Milan-Cortina 2026. The avalanche occurred near venues hosting Olympic events. The town remains a popular destination for alpine skiing despite the natural hazards associated with the winter season.
