Former Labour Party adviser arrested on suspicion of spying for China
Chinese espionage in Britain: David Taylor, a major Labour donor and close to senior politicians, was arrested in March on suspicion of aiding Chinese intelligence, amid escalating security warnings over Beijing’s attempts to influence the British Parliament.
The Telegraph has revealed that David Taylor, a former Labour Party adviser and one of the party’s major donors, was arrested on suspicion of spying for China, in a case raising escalating security concerns in Britain.
Taylor, who is married to Labour MP Joani Reid, was arrested in March on suspicion of aiding Chinese intelligence services—which he denies—and was released on bail pending investigation by the counter-terrorism unit.
Suspension of membership and wife’s return
His party membership was suspended immediately upon his arrest, and his wife voluntarily stepped back from party membership, but she was readmitted last month after an investigation confirmed she “did not see anything that made her suspect her husband had broken any law” and that she was not part of his business activities.
Rose Network and donations
Taylor was a member of the Rose Network, an elite circle of the party’s most generous donors, where members gain access to dinners, champagne receptions, and mixing with frontbench MPs. Most members give between £1,200 and £10,000 annually to join the network.
Investigations revealed that Taylor made a non-cash donation worth £2,400 to his wife a month before his arrest, while his companies owed thousands of pounds to her consultancy firm.
Rising security concerns
This scandal comes as UK security agencies warn of a growing threat from China, with MI5 issuing a security alert to MPs over “tireless” Chinese intelligence attempts to influence Parliament.
The Telegraph also revealed that Royal Navy surveillance aircraft sent classified data to China, raising espionage fears over the British military, while the Special Boat Service (SBS) banned Chinese-made electric vehicles from its headquarters over similar espionage concerns.

Diplomatic relations despite concerns
Despite these concerns, the Labour government continues its efforts to reset diplomatic relations with Beijing, hoping to secure profitable trade deals. It has approved plans for a “giant” Chinese embassy in central London, despite concerns over its proximity to sensitive communication lines.
