Coastal Protests: Clashes and Tight Security Measures in Several Cities

The cities of Tartus and Latakia witnessed protest rallies on Sunday organized by activists calling for the release of detainees, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The observatory reported that dozens of participants gathered in Latakia at Al-Azhari Square and in the city of Banyas, responding to a call issued by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal. Demonstrators raised demands related to civil and political rights amid heightened security measures, including intensive security deployments and searches around the gatherings.

The observatory noted that these activities coincided with clashes between demonstrators on one side and public security forces, groups known as “Local Peace Committees,” and supporters of the transitional authority on the other side, resulting in assaults, arrests, and prevention of documentation, according to the source. In contrast, the observatory also reported pro-government gatherings at other locations. Similar incidents were noted in the Al-Qusur neighborhood in Banyas, Al-Zira’a Square in Latakia, as well as in the cities of Jableh and Homs, where attempts were made to prevent demonstrators from gathering.

Meanwhile, the Syrian News Channel reported that internal security forces carried out a heavy deployment to secure the locations, noting that the rallies were held to condemn the mosque bombing in Homs and to demand justice and the release of detainees. These events occur amid ongoing tensions in the Syrian coast since the fall of the Assad regime, following security campaigns and arrests that rights reports say affected civilians and activists, amid calls for the release of detainees without trials.

Defense: Arrest of Intruders in Rural Tartus

In a separate development, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced the arrest of five individuals in rural Tartus while attempting to enter Syrian territory illegally.

The Ministry’s Directorate of Media and Communication told SANA that initial investigations showed that some of those arrested were former regime elements, and they were referred to the competent authorities to complete legal procedures. The ministry confirmed that border guard units continue to carry out their duties in protecting borders and preventing illegal crossings and activities.
