Controversial Video Sparks Debate Over Suwayda Students Leaving Damascus Dorms — Ministry Responds
Videos have circulated on social media showing the evacuation of students from several universities and dormitories, reportedly in response to recent events in Syria’s coastal region and the Suwayda governorate.
A senior official at the Ministry of Higher Education told Al-Watan newspaper that the widely shared footage of students leaving the Damascus university housing actually dates back to an earlier period. He emphasized that the current situation in student housing is completely stable and there is no cause for concern.
The source stressed that Syrian universities and dormitories will remain beacons of education, coexistence, and national unity, and rejected any attempt to turn them into platforms for chaos or incitement.
In a related statement, Damascus University Housing Director Imad al-Din al-Ayoubi affirmed that university dormitories remain detached from political issues, underscoring that students should not be involved in such matters within academic settings.
Speaking to Al-Watan, al-Ayoubi added that the doors of universities and student housing remain open to all Syrians, regardless of sect or affiliation, highlighting their ability to adapt to change since the fall of the former regime on December 8, 2024.
He concluded by calling for greater cooperation between administrations, students, and relevant ministries to safeguard the educational environment and ensure shared goals are achieved.
