Countries That Recognized Palestine: On Sunday, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Portugal officially recognized the State of Palestine, a decision that sparked strong reactions from Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to respond after his return from the United States.
The UK: Recognition to Keep Peace Alive
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on X: “Today we recognized the State of Palestine to revive hope for peace between Palestinians and Israelis. We now join more than 150 countries that recognize the Palestinian state.”
Starmer emphasized that his government remains committed to keeping the two-state solution alive, while also imposing new sanctions against Hamas members. He stressed that Hamas should have no role in future governance or security arrangements.
Canada and Australia Join the Recognition
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed in a statement that Canada now officially recognizes Palestine, offering support in building “a peaceful and promising future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel.”
Similarly, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Foreign Minister announced that Australia formally recognizes an independent and sovereign Palestinian state. Their statement underlined that this step reflects Australia’s commitment to the Palestinian people’s legitimate aspirations and is part of a coordinated international effort to revive the two-state solution, starting with a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages.
France Signals Support for Recognition
French President Emmanuel Macron said that France’s intention to recognize Palestine represents “the beginning of the road to peace.” He called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the resumption of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Countries That Recognized Palestine.. Israeli Response
In reaction, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing charges at the International Criminal Court, rejected the move, claiming that the recognition of Palestine “threatens Israel’s existence.” He vowed to counter the decision in the United Nations and continue what he described as Israel’s “legitimate battle” against Hamas.
Growing List of Countries That Recognized Palestine
Ahead of the UN General Assembly, nine countries announced their plans to recognize Palestine: France, the UK, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Andorra, and San Marino. Portugal is also expected to make its formal announcement shortly.
With these new additions, the number of countries that recognized Palestine will reach 147 out of 193 UN member states. Notably, four of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council — China, Russia, the UK, and France — will have officially recognized Palestine, further strengthening its global legitimacy.
