Dozens Injured and Displaced Due to a South Korean Air Force Mistake
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that at least 15 people were injured on Thursday after eight bombs were accidentally dropped on a civilian area during live-fire military exercises in the city of Bucheon. In addition to the human casualties, the incident resulted in the destruction of a church and six other buildings.
The South Korean Air Force issued a statement clarifying the incident: “Eight MK-82 multi-purpose bombs were abnormally released from an Air Force KF-16 aircraft and exploded outside the designated firing range.” The statement expressed deep regret over the accident, which led to civilian injuries.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s Fire Department reported that four people suffered serious injuries, while three others sustained minor wounds. Several residents were also displaced due to the incident.
Bucheon is located 40 kilometers northeast of Seoul, near the heavily militarized border with North Korea.
