Nile Water Crisis: Egypt Holds Ethiopia Responsible for River Damages
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty emphasized that the issue of water represents an “existential matter” for his country, noting that he discussed this file during his meeting with his Dutch counterpart amid what he described as Ethiopia’s unilateral actions in managing the Nile River.
During a joint press conference held on Tuesday, Abdel Aaty stated that Ethiopia’s actions have led to the flooding of large areas in Sudan and caused damage to “riverbank lands” in Egypt. He said these developments are a direct result of uncoordinated policies with the downstream countries, reaffirming the need for prior notification and full coordination before implementing any measures affecting Nile waters.
In a separate context, Abdel Aaty noted that the talks with his Dutch counterpart also addressed adherence to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, emphasizing the importance of host countries providing full protection and support for foreign diplomatic missions. He expressed appreciation for the Netherlands’ commitment to ensuring the safety of all embassies operating on its territory, including the Egyptian Embassy.
