Enhancing Defense Capabilities: Egypt Announces Production of “Thunder” System

Egypt’s Minister of State for Military Production, Mohamed Salah El-Din Mostafa, announced the near completion of a production line for the K9 A1 EGY self-propelled howitzer, known as “Thunder”, at Factory 200. The project is part of a broader strategy to localize defense industries and strengthen the country’s self-reliant manufacturing capabilities for the armed forces.

The minister noted that the “Thunder” system is an upgraded version of South Korea’s K9 Thunder artillery, which is currently in use by several NATO countries. He emphasized that this step marks a significant advancement in Egypt’s defense manufacturing sector.

In parallel, he announced the development of the Sina 200 armored vehicle and the production of armored steel for the first time in Egypt and the Middle East, in cooperation with the private sector. These projects are aimed at enhancing the country’s capacity to manufacture tanks and combat vehicles.

Specifications of the “Thunder” System

The system features high firepower, with 155mm shells reaching ranges between 40 and 56 kilometers, depending on the type of ammunition. It is designed for rapid deployment, capable of taking position and preparing to fire within one minute, while sustaining a firing rate of six to eight rounds per minute.

For protection, the howitzer is equipped with 19mm armor plating, providing resistance against light weapons and shrapnel, in addition to protection against chemical and biological threats. The system is operated by a five-member crew and is supported by the K10 resupply vehicle, which enables automatic reloading, and the K77 mobile fire direction center, which ensures precise targeting and coordinated fire control.
