Erdogan: Turkey Developing ‘Steel Dome’ as Russian S-400 Systems Alone Are Insufficient

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that while the Russian-made S-400 air defense systems are significant, they do not fully meet Turkey’s national security requirements. He emphasized the need to develop a multi-layered air defense system based on domestic technologies.

Erdogan’s remarks came during a conversation with journalists accompanying him on his return flight from The Hague, Netherlands, following his participation in the NATO summit. He addressed developments related to Turkey’s air defense program and current regional challenges.

According to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, the president noted that relying solely on the S-400 system is not a viable long-term strategy, particularly in light of evolving regional dynamics. “It has become increasingly clear to the public that we need an integrated, multi-tiered air defense system capable of operating effectively at different altitudes,” he said.

Erdogan also highlighted Turkey’s progress in developing indigenous missile technologies but acknowledged that more work is needed to achieve full self-sufficiency. “We are currently working on a comprehensive system called the ‘Steel Dome,’ which will integrate multi-altitude air defense platforms, sensor technologies, and electronic warfare systems—all developed locally,” he added.
