European Statement on Greenland Following US President Trump’s Remarks

European Statement Affirms Denmark and Greenland’s Sovereignty in Decision-Making

France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Denmark issued a joint statement affirming that Greenland belongs to its people, and that any decisions regarding the island or Denmark should be made solely by Denmark and Greenland. The statement also emphasized the importance of ensuring security in the Arctic region through joint efforts and in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter, including territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders.

European Commission spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Anita Heber, highlighted that the Arctic represents a priority for the European Union, noting that Brussels is reviewing Greenland as part of its regional security strategy. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Heber stated that the European Union fully supports Greenland and Denmark in matters related to regional security.

The statement comes in response to remarks made by US President Donald Trump following the military operation in Venezuela, in which he indicated that the United States requires Greenland due to its strategic importance for national security.
